Government must show nurses and midwives more respect

  • Government must stop taking nurses and midwives for granted
  • It’s time to scrap the 2% wage cap

Labor Leader Rebecca White has joined nurses and midwives calling on Health Minister Michael Ferguson to properly fund the health system and for the Treasurer to scrap his unfair wages policy.

Ms White said it was time for the Liberal Government to treat nurses and midwives with respect.

“All too often our hardworking nurses and midwives are being forced to put in double shifts of up to 18 hours because of an underfunded health system,” Ms White said.

“Michael Ferguson has taken his workforce’s dedication for granted.  He knows that hard-working nurses and midwives will do whatever it takes to deliver the best possible care to patients.

“Secret reports hidden by Michael Ferguson show a $100 million funding black hole every year that will blow out to more than half a billion dollars over the forward estimates.

“Today Labor is again calling for Treasurer Peter Gutwein to scrap his unfair wages policy and negotiate with nurses and midwives in good faith.

“It shows a lack of respect to nurses and midwives that Peter Gutwein won’t budge on his numbers.

“It doesn’t matter how many job ads for nurses and midwives the Liberals place, Tasmania cannot recruit enough quality staff as long as they remain among the worst paid in the country.”
