Just one thing standing between housing crisis and $32 million in housing funding … and that’s Minister Jaensch’s signature

  • Jaensch needs to explain why he hasn’t signed on for significant funding agreement
  • $32 million on the table while housing crisis continues
  • Hodgman Government needs to explain budget figures next week if no agreement reached

Tasmanians are continuing to sleep rough and make do with tents for homes as $32 million to address housing and homelessness remains on the table unclaimed by the Hodgman Liberal Government.

Shadow Housing Minister Josh Willie said the clock was ticking toward the deadline to sign up to the Turnbull Government’s National Housing and Homelessness Agreement with no indication from Housing Minister Roger Jaensch that he is willing to treat the housing crisis seriously and urgently seek the available funds.

Mr Willie said the Agreement will give Tasmania $32 million toward addressing housing and homelessness services, providing the State Government agreed to contribute $5.6 million in matched funding for homelessness services in the State Budget.

“The deadline for Tasmania to sign up to receive this $32 million – part of the Commonwealth’s $375 million commitment for homelessness services – is June 30 and with the State Budget just five days away, Mr Jaensch needs to indicate whether he intends to sign on,” Mr Willie said.

“If not, he needs to explain why – are there risks because the Federal Liberal Party is intending to cut housing funding through an outcome based mechanism?”

“There’s never been a more crucial time to seek and provide funding to address housing affordability and homelessness but at the same time it’s important to ask: Why has Minister Jaensch made no mention of this important funding on offer and why has he made no mention of the Liberals’ intentions, either to take up the offer or provide the required state contribution?

“With five days until the State Budget – and with just three weeks until the deadline until the offer of $32 million expires – can Minister Jaensch today give a guarantee he is at least talking to Canberra and working to secure this funding?

“Or can Tasmanians expect the same pitiful inaction from a Liberal Government that four years ago promised to build 430 social housing homes – but has so far delivered a very unimpressive 37?”
