Liberals’ health con job after four years of cuts and mismanagement

  • Liberals can’t be trusted on health
  • Hodgman and Ferguson cut $210 million from the health and hospital system
  • Announcement is an admission they cut too deep
  • Tasmanians don’t want another four years of Michael Ferguson running the health system
  • Labor’s $560 million policy will deliver 500 additional health workers

“Health is Labor’s number one priority and that is why we have made a commitment of an extra $560 million in our Putting Patients First health policy,” Labor Leader Rebecca White said.

“We’ll employ an additional 500 health workers with more nurses, more doctors and more paramedics.

“Labor’s policy focuses on better integrating primary and acute health care services to provide better patient care and help keep people out of hospital.

“We understand that investments in preventative health, mental health, chronic disease management and better communication between hospitals and GPs will provide better services closer to where people live and take pressure off our hospitals.

“Labor will update the masterplans at each of the state’s four hospitals and we have provided $250 million for this building work, to provide more beds and more services.

“After chronically underfunding our health system, today the Liberals acknowledge they cut too far.

“Their disgraceful attempt to con Tasmanians into thinking that they care about public health services is a shallow election promise.

“This is the same Liberal Government that cut $210 million from health in their first budget.

“They have shut beds, reduced services, ceased programs, lost specialist staff and created a dysfunctional governance structure that no one has confidence in.

“They outsourced services to the private system, their mismanagement has seen Tasmania lose training accreditation at two hospitals and they have bungled the Royal Hobart Hospital rebuild so badly that it is more than $100 million over budget and years behind.

“Health Minister Michael Ferguson has treated the workforce with contempt and displayed an arrogance that is beyond breathtaking.

“Tasmanians don’t want another four years of Michael Ferguson as Health Minister. The only time he has responded to the cries for help from the health workforce is on the eve on an election.

“Today’s announcement is a smack in the face to all those medical staff that have worked so hard to hold the system together over the past four years with inadequate resources and funding.

“What will the Liberals cut to pay for all their election promises? This deceitful election spin has now racked up a spend of more than $2.5 billion since the last budget and Tasmanians deserve to know what the Liberals will cut to pay for their promises.

“Tasmanians will not be fooled by today’s con job.”
