Liberals must ensure no delays to new vessels
- German shipbuilder reportedly in deep financial trouble
- Government must commit to deliver new vessels on time
Shadow Minister for Infrastructure David O’Byrne has today called on the Government to commit to deliver the two new Spirit of Tasmania vessels without delay.
“Reports today that the Government’s hand-picked German shipbuilder is experiencing financial problems is a serious concern.
“These vessels represent the single largest purchase in the state’s history, Minister Rockliff needs to explain why we are only hearing about this issue through the media,” Mr O’Byrne said.
“Tasmania is in high demand for international and interstate tourists and many Tasmanian families depend on the Spirits for interstate travel.
“The increased capacity of these vessels is vital to ensure the tourism industry can continue to grow.
“The Government committed to deliver the vessels in 2021 and the clock is ticking.
“Minister Rockliff has been seriously disengaged and he needs to reassure Tasmanians that he is up to the job of delivering this critical project.”
