Every child in Tasmania in every school deserves the opportunity to get a great education to be the best they can be and contribute to Tasmania’s future.
Labor believes in a public education system that supports everyone – regardless of where you live, your background or how much money you have or don’t have.
Tasmanian Labor has announced our plan to invest in education.
- Immediately restore teacher number to pre-Hodgman levels.
- Support our teachers through improved training.
- Invest in our kids’ future by reinstating pathway planning.
- Restore the damage done to TAFE by keeping training dollars in Tasmania.
- Make education a whole of life experience and encourage Tasmanians to reskill on the job via university or TAFE.
Can you sign and show your support for public education and restoring teacher numbers?
As the 2016 school year commences, parents are now seeing the impact of the Hodgman Government cuts to their schools. Teachers are taking on bigger workloads and larger class sizes with less resources. Schools are cutting programs like music and band because they simply cannot afford to pay for them.
It is not fair or right that our students, teachers and our schools are paying the price for the Hodgman Government’s lack of support and total disrespect for our public education system.
Labor knows that by keeping class sizes down, kids get individual attention and support and there is less stress on teachers. That’s why Labor will repair the damage done by the Liberal Government by investing in a world-class education system that delivers for all Tasmanians.
In 2014 the Hodgman Liberal Government broke a key election promise by slashing $150 million from Tasmanian schools and sacking the equivalent of two teachers from every school. Will Hodgman then refused to stand up for education in Tasmania and stood by as his federal colleagues slashed a further $2.1 billion from our schools and hospitals.
Teachers, students and parents have asked Labor to repair the damage done to our schools by investing in a world-class education system that delivers for all Tasmanians.
And that’s what Labor will do.
