Positive employment stats welcomed but big challenges remain

  • Labor welcomes improvements in total and full-time employment
  • Trend towards part-time and casual work still not being addressed
  • Participation rate remains stubbornly low

Shadow Treasurer Scott Bacon has welcomed the modest improvements contained in today’s employment figures from the ABS.

“It’s pleasing to see total employment and full-time employment both pick up,” Mr Bacon said.

“Unfortunately it’s one step forward after a horror 12 months for full-time employment across the state.

“Since this time last year, we’ve lost 4100 full-time jobs with a huge trend towards part-time employment.

“The unemployment rate of 5.8% would be higher if Tasmania had a better participation rate.

“The participation rate is stuck on 59.7%. Peter Gutwein argues* himself that a participation rate below 60% indicates people are giving up looking for work”.

“There are encouraging signs in today’s figures but the Government needs to get its head out of the sand to address the challenges instead of just bragging about the improvements.”
