Vulnerable Tasmanians disadvantaged by Aurora’s new PAYG technology

- Tasmanians facing prospect of not being able to heat their homes
- Government must intervene to ensure all Tasmanians have access
The Government needs to step in to ensure vulnerable Tasmanians aren’t disadvantaged by Aurora’s new pay-as-you go technology due to be rolled out early next year.
Shadow Energy Minister, David O’Byrne, said today’s GBE hearings in Hobart have revealed Tasmanians without an email address and access to the internet would not be eligible for the new technology.
“It is totally unreasonable for Aurora Energy to assume that all of its customers have email accounts and internet access,” Mr O’Byrne said.
“This will disadvantage elderly Tasmanians and people with disabilities and health issues who don’t have internet at home and aren’t able to travel to their nearest library to use a public Wi-Fi network.
“The Government must act now and force Aurora Energy to put measures in place to ensure all Tasmanians can access this new technology.
“If the Government fails to act, many Tasmanians will face the prospect of not being able to afford to heat their homes in winter.”
