The Government must extend private rental protections to ensure families impacted by COVID-19 have a roof over their head.

Shadow Housing Minister Alison Standen MP said the Government had failed to address the deepening housing crisis and must now listen to experts in the community sector and extend the protections to end March in line with the majority of other states.

“Dashboard data released on Friday showed nearly 3 600 families are now waiting to be housed, on average nearly 64 weeks for priority applicants,” Ms Standen said.

“At the same time, shelters are full, turning away 31 unassisted requests every day.

“The private rental crisis has been getting worse, impacting the availability and affordability of private rental properties; and the government has refused to regulate short stay accommodation to relieve the pressure in the private rental market.

“With unemployment figures some of the worst in the country, Labor sees no alternative but for the Government to extend the moratorium on rent increases and on evictions for another two months, provided tenants can demonstrate financial hardship due to the pandemic.

“This would bring Tasmania into line with the majority of other states, including NSW which is a current hotspot area, and WA which is not a hotspot.

“The Government has clearly failed to ensure there is a plan and a safety net for those families facing homelessness. At the same time, the Government must support landlords who rely on their investment income.

“The private rental protections and financial support programs were intended to support both tenants and landlords through the pandemic until market conditions return.

“The housing system is in crisis and Minister Jaensch must use these additional two months to commit to meaningful and lasting reform, and ensure there is a fair system that supports both tenants and landlords.”
